The Big 5 Safaris
Annually, we expertly match over 100,000 proactive individuals seeking expertise in finance, lending, and claims management with experienced advisors and brokers.
The Big Five (lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo) are Africa’s most iconic and sought-after wildlife species. Originally named for the difficulty of hunting them on foot, they’ve since become a symbol of safari excellence. For many travelers, spotting all five in the wild is a dream come true.
East Africa is one of the best places in the world to complete the Big Five checklist. With vast protected landscapes, healthy populations, and highly trained guides, the region offers unrivaled opportunities to witness these powerful animals up close.
The Big Five can be found across a range of ecosystems in East Africa. From the crater floors of Tanzania to the grassy savannahs of Kenya, the rolling plains of Uganda, and the revitalized wilderness of Rwanda. Each country offers unique opportunities to spot these majestic animals, and knowing where to go increases your chances of seeing them all.
While Uganda is best known for its primate experiences, several of its national parks offer excellent opportunities to spot members of the Big Five.
• Queen Elizabeth National Park: Known for tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha sector and healthy elephant and buffalo populations. Leopards are present but elusive.
• Murchison Falls National Park: Excellent sightings of elephants, buffalo, and lions. Leopards can be seen with luck.
• Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary: The only place in Uganda to see rhinos in the wild. Guided on-foot treks offer close, safe encounters.
Kenya is one of Africa’s top safari destinations and offers reliable Big Five sightings in multiple ecosystems.
• Masai Mara National Reserve: Exceptional for lion, leopard, buffalo, and elephant. Rhinos are present in certain areas, particularly in private conservancies.
• Lake Nakuru National Park: Known for its rhino population (both black and white) and scenic lake views.
• Tsavo East and West: Vast landscapes with excellent sightings of elephants and lions; leopards and rhinos require more effort.
Tanzania offers a classic Big Five safari experience in diverse and dramatic landscapes.
• Serengeti National Park: Excellent for lions, leopards, buffalo, and elephants. Black rhinos are present in low numbers.
• Ngorongoro Crater: One of the best places in Africa to see all five in a single day. Compact, wildlife-rich, and visually stunning.
• Tarangire National Park: Great for elephants, lions, and buffalo. Less common for rhinos.
Rwanda’s safari offerings are expanding and include opportunities to see the Big Five in Akagera National Park.
• Akagera National Park: Rwanda’s only savannah park and home to all members of the Big Five thanks to successful reintroduction efforts. Lions were reintroduced in 2015, black rhinos in 2017, and white rhinos in 2021. Elephant, buffalo, and leopards are also present.
June to October: Dry season across East Africa; wildlife is easier to spot as animals gather around water sources
January to February: Hot and dry; good visibility and predator activity
March to May: Green season; fewer crowds, but sightings may require more effort
The Big Five are flagship species for conservation, and your visit helps protect them. Park fees and responsible tourism support anti-poaching efforts, habitat protection, and community education programs that ensure these species thrive for future generations.
From the excitement of a lion sighting to the quiet awe of watching rhinos graze, a Big Five safari is a deeply rewarding journey. Perfect for first-timers and seasoned safari-goers alike.
