Gorilla Trekking

Annually, we expertly match over 100,000 proactive individuals seeking expertise in finance, lending, and claims management with experienced advisors and brokers.

Gorilla trekking is one of the most intimate and awe-inspiring wildlife experiences in Africa. With fewer than 1,100 mountain gorillas left in the wild, the opportunity to spend an hour in the presence of a wild gorilla family is a rare privilege, and one that leaves a lasting emotional impression.

Trekking into the mist-covered mountains of Uganda and Rwanda, you’ll be accompanied by experienced guides and trackers who spend their days monitoring gorilla families. These groups have been habituated, meaning they are accustomed to the presence of humans through a careful, years-long process that minimizes disruption to their natural behavior.

The treks can range from one to six hours depending on the gorilla group’s location, but the payoff is unparalleled: watching juveniles tumble through the trees, mothers cradle their infants, and a dominant silverback scan the forest in silent authority, all just meters away. This is not a zoo experience. This is their home and you are a quiet guest.

Where to go

The Mountain Gorillas inhabit the damp and dark forests of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda.

Uganda

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park: Bwindi is home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, distributed across several habituated families. The park’s name hints at its character: dense forest, steep ridges, and a true sense of wild. Each trek begins with a safety briefing and ends with a certificate of completion—a memento of a life-changing hour.

Rwanda

Volcanoes National Park: Part of the Virunga Mountains, this is Rwanda’s flagship destination for gorilla trekking. The park is known for its relatively short treks, well-established infrastructure, and high-end eco-lodges nestled just outside the park gate. Volcanoes NP is ideal for travelers seeking a luxury safari extension or a high-comfort, high-impact experience.

When to go

Gorilla trekking is available year-round, but the dry seasons from June to August and December to February are the most comfortable for hiking. Trails are less muddy and slippery, and visibility is better. However, gorillas can be tracked any time of year, and the rainy months often offer fewer tourists and lush photography conditions.

Conservation matters

Gorilla trekking is one of Africa’s greatest conservation success stories. The permit fees directly support habitat protection, ranger salaries, and community development, making your visit part of a broader mission to protect this critically endangered species.

An experience of a lifetime

Whether you're traveling for a milestone celebration, a wildlife lover's dream, or simply to experience one of the rarest moments on Earth, gorilla trekking is a memory you’ll carry for life.
