Chimpanzee Trekking
Annually, we expertly match over 100,000 proactive individuals seeking expertise in finance, lending, and claims management with experienced advisors and brokers.
Chimpanzee trekking is one of East Africa’s most energetic and interactive wildlife encounters. Unlike gorilla trekking, chimpanzees are fast-moving, highly vocal primates often heard before they are seen. The experience takes you deep into tropical rainforests, guided by skilled trackers who follow calls, nests, and footprints to locate a habituated chimpanzee group.
These treks are immersive and physical, often covering hilly terrain, dense jungle paths, and changing weather. But the reward is profound: observing chimpanzees as they communicate, forage, groom, and sometimes display sudden bursts of drama or humor.
Chimpanzee groups you visit are usually habituated, meaning they’ve been gradually acclimated to human presence through years of research and conservation work. Visitors follow strict guidelines to ensure both safety and respect for these highly intelligent animals.
The chimpanzees inhabit some of the most diverse and scenic forests in East Africa. These include the tropical rainforests of Kibale Forest and Budongo Forest in Uganda, the high-altitude jungles of Nyungwe National Park in Rwanda, the dramatic Kyambura Gorge near Queen Elizabeth National Park, and the remote slopes of Mahale Mountains along Lake Tanganyika in Tanzania.
Kibale Forest National Park: Often called the “Primate Capital of the World,” Kibale is home to over 1,500 chimpanzees and 12 other primate species. The park’s guided treks offer some of the highest chimp sighting success rates in Africa. Trails wind through lush rainforest teeming with birdlife and butterflies, and visitors may also encounter red colobus monkeys and mangabeys along the way.
Nyungwe Forest National Park: Set in a high-altitude rainforest, Nyungwe offers both chimpanzee trekking and a scenic canopy walk. With 13 primate species and over 300 bird species, Nyungwe’s biodiversity adds a rich backdrop to the trekking experience. Chimpanzee groups are smaller and more elusive here, but the forest itself is magical.
Kyambura Gorge: Nicknamed “The Valley of the Apes,” this lush, forested canyon is hidden within Queen Elizabeth National Park. Although the chimp population is smaller and sightings less predictable (~60% chance), the dramatic landscape makes the experience unforgettable.
Mahale Mountains National Park: Accessible only by boat across Lake Tanganyika, Mahale is a remote and pristine setting where forested mountains meet crystal-clear shores. Its chimpanzee population is well habituated, and the trekking here feels deeply exclusive.
Budongo Forest (Kaniyo Pabidi): Located in the northwestern part of Uganda near Murchison Falls, this forest offers rich biodiversity and excellent chimp trekking through relatively flat terrain. Visitors also support community-based conservation efforts.
Semliki Wildlife Reserve: Trekking here is less about guaranteed sightings and more about frontier-style exploration. The drier, sparse habitat requires chimpanzees to travel long distances, making sightings rare but the research opportunity fascinating.
Chimpanzee trekking is available year-round, but the best conditions are during the dry seasons: June to September and December to February. During these months, forest trails are drier and less slippery, making trekking easier and more comfortable. Sightings tend to be more consistent, and the chances of uninterrupted observation are higher.
Chimpanzee trekking permits support anti-poaching units, habitat protection, and community programs. By visiting, you’re not just experiencing something unforgettable. You’re contributing to the future of a critically important species and the ecosystems they help maintain.
Whether you choose Uganda’s rainforests, Rwanda’s highlands, or Tanzania’s remote parks, chimpanzee trekking offers a rare window into the social complexity and spirit of one of our closest living relatives.
